Viktoria “Vicky” Maurus
Viktoria Maurus was born August 19, 1962 in Boehen Germany. She passed away on January 9, 2026 after a short battle with cancer. Her parents were Ludwig and Annamarie Maurus. She was second eldest in a family of 7. She went to school and grew up in the community of Boehen. She went on to take a Home Economics training at a technical school. Vicky being second eldest in the family was often left in charge of the younger siblings when their parents were away working on the farm. Even though she was raised on a dairy farm she never learned to milk a cow.
After she graduated from her training she decided she wanted to travel as she was anxious to see more of the world. She wanted to work in Africa as a development aid worker but wasn’t sure she would be able to be away for 2 years from her home. Therefore she thought a shorter time would be a good trial period. She found that opportunity working on a family farm in Saskatchewan. This was a big challenge for Vicky to be so far from home and having to speak English everyday. During her 3 month stay she formed a bond with the Boden family and by the end of her stay she was already talking about a return trip.
Vicky returned to Germany and in the fall of 1985 she agreed to a 2 year contract in Tanzania where she usually helped in the kitchen. When she finished her first contract and was back in Germany she came again to visit us in Canada for another 3 month stay. The mission in Africa asked her to return again as they required someone to replace an ill sister. In 1987 Vicky went to Tanzania for another 18 month period being responsible for the kitchen preparing meals for up to 200 people a day.
Vicky came to Canada a number of times in the early 1990’s, each time visiting a different part of Canada. She had met a special person and wanted to show him some of the country she loved. She married the love of her life, Andreas Denz on April 13, 1996 and they settled in Buchloe Germany. Vicky was employed with a Sheltered Workshop for the handicapped and disabled during those years. She helped people do various crafts and handiwork
Vicky and Andreas continued to talk about a desire to move to Canada. In 2010, they made the move and settled in Warman, purchasing a home there. Vicky worked at a variety of jobs, the Cosmo workshop, she worked as a job coach for handicapped teenage students, and then applying to the school board for contract positions. She started as an EA on the substitute list. From 2018-2021 she had a permanent contract with Holy Trinity Catholic School in Warman. She worked last at Ecole Holy Mary Catholic School in Martensville. She had a permanent position as EA there since 2022. Vicky really enjoyed working with her students and I know they really got attached to her.
Vicky developed a number of pastime pursuits. The care and attention she gave to the development of her backyard garden was incredible, especially the care to watering. She planted a variety of garden vegetables and especially loved growing tomatoes and peppers. She also loved her Lilies and Roses and lots of hanging flowerpots. She had Andreas building greenhouses and all manner of supports and trellis.
Vicky loved to bake and preserve her produce. She made wonderful German Tortes. She supported the German community and belonged to a group called the “KulturGarten” in Saskatoon and often helped with their fundraisers.
Vicky is survived by her loving husband of nearly 30 years, Andreas Denz. She is also survived by many family members and friends back in Germany. She will be greatly missed by her many friends here in Canada.
