With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Shelley Christine Balback.

Born in Vancouver, Shelley eventually made her home in Saskatoon, where she proudly became a devoted Roughriders fan. She is survived by her children Corey (Karlie), Austin (Danielle), Dallas, Spencer (Kiara), Shane (Rebecca), and Miranda (Brandon), as well as her seven beloved grandchildren.

Books were Shelley’s refuge. She rarely went anywhere without one—and often two—in hand. She especially loved fantasy fiction: worlds filled with magic, mythical creatures, and impossible possibilities made real. Her love for imaginative storytelling extended to the screen as well. A dedicated Star Trek fan, she often found herself reflecting on life’s deeper questions, especially when deciding between her favourite captains: Jean-Luc Picard and Kathryn Janeway.

Shelley deeply cherished life’s simple comforts—most of all, the joy of reading in a long, luxurious bubble bath. A true bubble-bath connoisseur, she knew exactly which products created the perfect scent and the most satisfying mountain of bubbles.

She was also an extraordinary baker. Every holiday season she spent weeks preparing an abundance of treats, with her cheesecake becoming a family legend. She never hesitated to contribute to school bake sales and delighted in surprising coworkers with homemade sweets. Everything Shelley created in the kitchen was made with love and generosity.

Known for her strong work ethic, Shelley instilled the same value in all her children. Fiercely independent and blessed with a wicked sense of humour, she never sweated the small stuff. While often the target of playful teasing from her kids, she never failed to deliver a razor-sharp comeback of her own.

In her final moments, Shelley chose to give the gift of life through organ donation. In lieu of flowers, please consider registering as an organ donor or making a donation to the Foundation's Learning & Skills Saskatchewan Fund.
