In Loving Memory of Martha Peters, who passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, in Saskatoon, SK, at age 87. She was predeceased by her parents, Isbrand & Elizabeth Peters, son-in-law, Bob Mamer, her husband, Jake Peters, and brother-in-law, Jake Wiebe. She issurvived by her sisters: Anne Wiebe, Edna Friesen (husband Neil), Joyce Bergen (husbandAllan); daughters: Jackie Mamer (husband Dennis Zlipko), Bonnie Friesen (husband Darcy), and Judy Schroeder (husband Tim); also 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, andnumerous nieces and nephews.
Martha was born on September 30th, 1937, to Isbrand and Elizabeth Peters of Warman, who were grain farmers with a homestead just east of highway 11. Martha attended school in Warman until Grade 10. Mom gave her life to Christ around the age of 12 at a JanzTeam evangelistic event. She was baptised at the age of 16 along with her sister, Anne.
At age 19, Martha moved to Saskatoon; she met Jake Peters two years later and was married to him in Saskatoon on a beautiful fall day in September of 1960. Martha left employment not long after the wedding to begin a family, and within three years, they had a lovely trio of daughters: Jackie, Bonnie, and Judy.
Martha was a very busy but dedicated Mom raising their three daughters. Church, piano lessons, and summer camp were a priority for her daughters as the years passed by. Marthavolunteered with West Portal Church, most notably in their Pioneer Girls program. Some time after all the girls were in school, Martha was hired by a Sears retail store. Martha worked for Sears for many years until she had the opportunity to enter the world of long-term care at the Central Haven Special Care Home. Her daughters were very proud of Martha when she took courses via Kelsey Campus. This enabled her to officially obtain her Special Care Aide certificate in April 1984. Mom retired at age 65 from Central Haven in the Fall of 2002.
Over the course of her 87 years of life, Martha faced many challenges. Mom's first major loss was the death of her Dad due to pancreatic cancer, followed by the passing of her Mom several years later. It was the unexpected death of son-in-law, Bob (husband to Jackie), in 2004 that truly broke her heart. The ultimate test of faith came when cancer took the life of Martha's beloved husband, Jake. After being his faithful caregiver, she struggled to find her identity outside of her marriage of 48 years. Not long after Jake's passing, Mom endured significant health challenges that led to the diagnosis of a neurological disorder. It was then that she was blessed with a change of address by moving into an Assisted Living suite at Circle Drive Place. This provided her with new friends and a new place to serve God by loving those around her. Over the last 12 years, Martha befriended many of the staff in her residence and enjoyed wonderful friendships with her neighbours.
Martha was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery just before Christmas of 2023. This was a wake-up call for the girls, especially when their Mom was unable to tolerate the hormone therapy intended to keep the cancer in check. Martha had peace with her decision to decline treatment and continued to thrive in her last year and a half of life. She now had three great-grandchildren to welcome into her humble apartment, and it gave her great joy when they visited.
It was with much concern that a sudden change in health precipitated an admission to Royal University Hospital a mere month ago. Martha suspected the cause of her symptoms, and it was soon confirmed that her cancer had spread, and time was limited. During her short time in Palliative Care at SPH, Martha continued to look to Jesus with gratitude and for peace, which was tangible. With incredible faith and courage, she sang many songs of praise to her Saviour, with "God is So Good” being a favourite. She enjoyed many precious visits from family and friends, and it buoyed her spirits immensely. The family would like to thank everyone who prayed for Martha in her final days. It made a world of difference for her and for each one of the family.
Martha slipped peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on Tuesday, June 3rd. She is dearly missed by her daughters and their husbands, along with her grandchildren (Dylan, Shelbe, Alexandria, Anna, Taylor, and Daniel) and 3 beautiful great-grandchildren (Primrose, Henry, and Ephraim).
Martha bequeathed to her family the most precious of gifts: A great legacy of faith for which we are all grateful and are inspired to replicate. We love you, Mom, and we look forward to that wonderful day when we'll be joyfully reunited with you again.
