Loretta Jane Milashenko was born on July 27, 1939 and grew up on the family farm near Arelee Sk. After high school, she went to Teachers College and got a teaching certificate. Her first job was with Miereau School near Langham, where she taught 11 students in 7 grades. She then taught a couple of years back in Arelee, with many of her students being friends and neighbours. Once she had saved up enough money, she attended Bible College at Briercrest for a year. She had planned on going back, but Jack Matiko intervened with a marriage proposal. The couple was married on November 11, 1961, in a double ceremony with Jack’s sister Esther (Walter Gnida). They continued to farm the original Matiko farm till 1998, when they sold it to the Hutterites and fully retired to Saskatoon. Retirement was filled with gardening, grandkids, fishing and many church activities. Loretta had many hobbies and interests, but her passion was her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whom she faithfully served through her local church. Loretta passed away on December 31, 2025, after complications from cancer. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jack Matiko, four sisters, Leona (Jim) Smith, Grace Milashenko, Linda Janzen (Yanni Pahatouroglou) and Vicki (Les) Barker, as well as three children, Bill (Sue) Matiko, Sharon (Jim) Downey, Charlotte (Meldon) Lutzer and 7 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Big River Bible Camp.
