Laurence Schmidt was born on July 14, 1931, in Waldheim, in an old bank building that had been converted into a residence. He grew up on the family farm at Hepburn, Saskatchewan, with his parents, Julius and Lena Schmidt, and his four older brothers.

As a boy, at a very young age, he committed his life to Jesus Christ, his Saviour. His faith influenced his entire life until the day he died. It shaped how he raised his family, participated in many ministry capacities, dealt with stress, sorrow and triumph. His Christian attributes showed through his character to everyone he met.

Laurence attended Schmidtsburg school and later Hepburn High School. In 1947, he went with his parents and a number of his brothers to St. Catharines, Ontario, where over the winter he spent six months working for a division of General Motors assembling brakes, while also completing his grade X.

After high school, he was employed for 29 years, starting with the original Imperial Bank of Canada, which through mergers became the CIBC. His career took him to many communities in Saskatchewan and also Athabasca, Alberta. He held managerial positions in Maymont, Saskatoon and Biggar.

Laurence was a lifelong learner and was always eager to embrace new challenges. During his banking career, he earned two banking degrees through Queen’s University in Ontario, as well as a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

In 1954, Laurence married Linda Regehr of Hepburn. Together they were blessed with a son, Daryl and a daughter, Donna, and later three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was always interested in farming, and during his working years he farmed part-time in Hepburn.

In 1979, Laurence began a new chapter when he purchased Biggar Agencies, a business offering general insurance, real estate and travel business.

In 1984, he married Wilma Adrian. Together they shared many precious years, enjoying farming, travelling, and spending time with family.

Laurence was predeceased by his first wife Linda (1983), and his brothers, Henry, Albert, Ernest, John, and Benny.

Laurence will forever be remembered by his wife Wilma, two children, Daryl Schmidt (Marilyn), and Donna Baycroft (Owen); grandchildren, Kayla Klassen (Mike and children Maverick and Gabrielle), Ryan Schmidt (Molly and children Lincoln, Jett, and Crew), and Curtis Baycroft (Kara and daughter Kairi).

Laurence's Graveside Service will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Biggar Memorial Gardens Cemetery (1 mile South of Biggar on Highway 4).
