We remember a remarkable woman whose journey on this earth has come to a close. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for a life well lived. Her spirit will continue to live on in the many lives she touched over the past 102 years.

“It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home”.

Deeply loved & lovingly remembered by her children: Judy (Jim) Smith-Jones and Gordon Wall (Susan). Grandchildren; Coralea (Jean-Francois) Daigle, Jessica DeBack (Chris Vasseur), Eric Smith-Jones, Michael Smith-Jones, Tyler (Amy) Wall, Amy Wall (Calvin Elder). Great Grandchildren; Brooklynne, Melanie, Jaxson Daigle, Lucas and Noah Deback, Elias and Nya Wall. As well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one brother, George (Connie), and sisters in law, Gerda and Lois.

Predeceased by her parents, George and Katharina Friesen, husband Gerhard, sisters, Anne (Jake), Helen, Helen, Betty (Roy), Eva, Mary (Don), Martha (Keith), and brothers John (Mary), Bill, Al.

Born October 3, 1924, near Osler, SK to Katharina and George Friesen, on her Grandparents homestead, she was the 2nd eldest of 12 children. In later years, Mom enjoyed family reunions with her large extended Friesen clan in several Canadian provinces.

She was a committed church volunteer at First Mennonite Church including Ladies Aid where she turned stitches into love as she was heavily involved in the causes that were true to her heart. Weekly quilting and blanket tying had many finished blankets going to MCC which sent them to people in need around the world.

Mom stood out with her beautiful taste in fashion & meticulous hair. She loved connecting with friends and family and truly enjoyed visits and phone calls. Her good humor, friendly smile and infectious laugh always made it a joy to spend time with her. She treated everyone she met with respect and dignity.

At the age of 20, Mom left the farm and began work in Saskatoon at St. Paul’s Hospital. In the Fall of that year, she moved to the Bessborough Hotel where she lived in residence for 6 years and was employed as a housekeeper. Mom then moved on to clean offices at CFQC Radio & TV. After marrying Gerhard (George) Friesen August 9, 1951 and having her children, Mom returned to the workforce in 1963 and worked in the laundry at the Sheraton Cavalier, working her way up to Head Seamstress, where she remained for 18.5 years before retiring.

Mom enjoyed quilting, crocheting, bowling, playing cards, visiting and socializing with friends and family. She took pride in cooking for her family, celebrating and entertaining for special occasions. Mom was very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her family brought her great joy and she was always interested in their activities and achievements.

We are saddened to say goodbye but we are endlessly grateful for the warmth and love she shared with us.

The Wall family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the incredible staff at St. Paul’s Hospital for the care provided to Mom after her recent fall. As well, the compassionate care provided by the staff at Keedwell Assisted Living and Warman Mennonite Special Care Home, especially in Mom’s final days, will never be forgotten. There is a special place in heaven for these people.

John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Your love means the world to us. In lieu of flowers, for those wishing to honor Katharine’s memory, please consider a donation to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan to support provincial breast cancer screening and patient comfort programs. (cancerfoundationsask.ca).

Martens Warman Funeral Home is honoured to be entrusted with the care and arrangements of Mrs. Wall.
