Obituary

Joyce Anne (Sparrow) Friesen passed away March 11,2026 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, Sk at the age of 84. She is dearly remembered and missed by her children, Lorelie (Wendell) Barsi and their children Walker and Arieanna; and Cameron (Carla) Friesen and their children Conner and Chloe. She is also survived by a sister Sharon Sparrow, sister-in-law Irene (George) Sparrow, sister-in-law Mary (Arthur) Buhler, a special cousin Ronald (Riza) Chamberlin and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Henry Friesen and parents Reginald and Ruby Sparrow and brother George Sparrow.

Joyce was first and foremost a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Her unwavering faith guided her life and was evident in the strong values and beliefs she instilled in her family. She believed deeply in the power of being a lifelong learner. This was evident as she received in 1963 a diploma of Theology from Bethel Bible Institute, then returned to her studies and convocated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Theology.

Her pride and joy certainly were her children and grandchildren. Mom never hesitated to encourage an effort of excellence and support her family by being present at church, school, or music activities but her passion was sports. She loved sitting in the stands cheering; however, she was in her element when on skates playing Masters Ringette at 65, catching a baseball behind the plate, “pushing bush” -hunting, bird watching, travelling or camping. Mom and Dad volunteered hundreds of summer hours at Living Waters Camp – working on repairs, renovation projects or stepping up where there was a need. She enjoyed camp time and the services, friendships and coffee time but her absolute favorite time at camp was when it was quiet- she could wake up to the birds, watch the raccoon on the picnic table, or go to sleep to the coyotes, and being able to appreciate our place in His world.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the nurses of the Intermediate Care Services team and Gabby of Home Care for the excellent care mom received. And a special thank you to Dr Helms, who so wisely advocated and supported mom medically as we travelled the palliative care road.

A celebration of Joyce’s life and faith will be held on March 21, 2026 with internment at Hillcrest Cemetery at 10:00 followed by a service at Elim Church Chapel at 11:00. Please reach out to her children for a link for the 11:00 chapel service if you are unable to join in person.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation could be made to Horizon College and Seminary or Living Waters Camp – please indicate in “Memory of Joyce Friesen”.

Martens Warman Funeral Home is honoured to be entrusted with Mrs. Friesen's care and arrangements.
