With solemn hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Joe Beckwermert on August 4, 2025, at the age of 96. He was predeceased by his daughter Carla Ann, his wife Maria Isabel, his son-in-law, Greg, and his siblings, Magdalene, Anneliese, Reinhilde, and Heinrich.
He is survived by his daughter Michelle (Paul), step-daughter Melinda, five grandchildren, a great-grandson, brothers Walter and Helmut, and many others who knew him as “Opa Joe”.
Joe was born in Saerbeck, Germany, and immigrated to Canada in the 1950s. He lived in Uranium City and later moved to Saskatoon, where he attended the University of Saskatchewan and raised his family. He later taught at the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST). He married Maria Isabel in 1997, and together they made many memories with their friends and combined families.
Joe was a man of many interests and found pleasure in activities such as bird watching, camping, canoeing, biking, swimming, ballroom dancing, riding his motorcycle, gardening, propagating fruit trees, brewing chokecherry wine, making homemade videos and slideshows, scuba diving, traveling, learning new languages, fixing things, and improving things that didn’t need fixing. Above all, Joe will be remembered for his epic storytelling, outgoing personality, sense of adventure, openness and acceptance of others, a giving heart, and natural curiosity. He was the embodiment of carpe diem.
Thank you to the staff at Sherbrooke Community Centre and Home Instead for their care in his final years.
Prayers will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
