Obituary

After a happy and fulfilling life of 98 years, John Schellenberg passed away peacefully with family by his side, on November 26, 2025.

John married the love of his life, Evelyn Riekman, in July of 1950. Together, they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, faith and family.

John dedicated 33 years to education as both a beloved teacher and principal. Over the years, many former students shared with our family how meaningful his influence was in their lives. He retired in June of 1983, and, with his newly found free time, began a second career by purchasing a convenience store with his daughter Audrey and son-in-law Duff. Following his adventures in business, John and Evelyn enjoyed extensive worldwide travel together.

To the admiration of his family, John achieved two university degrees while working full-time to support his growing family. He loved to joke that he was the only one in the family with two degrees.

John was a man of deep and steady faith, and was a devoted charter member of Nutana Park Mennonite Church, where he served in many roles over the years.

John was the last surviving member of his family of origin and was predeceased by his parents Bernard and Aganetha, and his nine siblings. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife Evelyn (December 2016), his son-in-law Clifford Purves (July 2025), and his great-grandson Keaton Marcoux (July 2016).

John is lovingly remembered by his four children: Audrey McFarlane (Duff), Randy Schellenberg (Holly Dreger), Doreen Purves, and Judy Ludwig (Patrick).

He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Michelle, Christie (Shawn), Cory (Taryn), Jon (Jennifer), Jen (Deiter), Stephen (Chantal), John (Tiffany), Andrea (Sean), Jason (Renee), Tanya (Brett), and Riley (Janet), as well as by his 15 great-grandchildren.

John is also survived by brothers-in-law, George Riekman, Alvin Rempel and his sister-in-law, Nettie Thiessen.

John will be remembered for his devotion to his faith, his love of learning, his dedication to family, and his gentle sense of humour. His life was a true testament to perseverance, love and service.

Funeral will be held on December 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Nutana Park Mennonite Church, 1701 Ruth Street East, Saskatoon, SK.
