Joan Margaret Ashenhurst, aged 92, died peacefully with family at her side, in Saskatoon on July 28, 2026.

Born on October 1st, 1933, in Monaghan Ireland. Her parents moved to Antrim Northern Ireland in 1934 where her father established a retail business. Joan graduated in 1954 as a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and worked in Claremont Neurological Hospital in Belfast. Here is where she met Eddy, the love of her life. They were married in 1957, lived for a year in Hollywood, County Down and then made the journey to New York City. After a one-year fellowship at New York General Hospital, Ed then accepted a position at the U.of S. School of Medicine in Saskatchewan where they spent 30 years before retiring to British Columbia in 1989.

As immigrants there were no relatives close by so there was much gratitude for the wonderful support of many dear friends in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Joan is survived by her daughter Lynn (Robert), grandchildren Laura and Logan (Meghanne) and great granddaughter Sloane and by her son Michael (Vivian) and grandchildren Christine and Edward.

She will be remembered for her love of Ireland, the Canadian West Coast, the tropical breezes of Kauai, a dip in the ocean, a competitive game of bridge or tennis, a cat in her lap, knitting needles or clay in hand, working in the garden, a bargain, a project, the patina of Irish silver, furniture with a history, a wee cup of tea or coffee and a goody, a lovely bouquet of flowers and a hummingbird at the feeder. She was a loyal friend to many and she brought strength, stability, creativity, fun and love to our little family.
