With heartfelt sadness, we announce that Jennie Sigrun Sigurdson passed away on June 12, 2023, in Saskatoon, SK. She died peacefully at Glengarda Hospice after her health declined rather quickly over the last couple of months.
Jennie was born on August 17, 1932, in Wynyard, SK., the seventh of ten children, to Sigrun and Baldvin Sigurdson. Jennie spent her early years growing up on the farm, south of Wynyard, eventually moving into town with her family. Jennie graduated from Wynyard Composite High School in 1951 and worked in Wynyard at Cameron and Pope Hardware. In 1952 she moved to Regina. She worked in various government departments over the years in Regina, Prince Albert, and Saskatoon, a career which spanned 35 years.
Jennie was married from 1975 to1988. Throughout the years, Jennie travelled to Iceland, Cuba, Hawaii, and various points in Canada and the USA. She enjoyed a variety of activities with her many friends including: curling, cross-country skiing, fishing, attending theatre productions, bowling, golfing, reading, gardening, cards, going to the Farmer’s Market, playing Scrabble and doing crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed going to restaurants with her various friend groups and liked entertaining.
Jennie truly loved children and was a great fan of her 19 nieces and nephews and her 22 great nieces and nephews – travelling to visit them, phoning and keeping in contact with them and attending their special events. Jennie had no children of her own, this was her biggest regret. Jennie very much appreciated her siblings and was always present for Sigurdson family Christmas get-togethers and other family events such as weddings and graduations. Jennie was proud of her Icelandic heritage and was very glad to have travelled to Iceland. She enjoyed Icelandic baking such as Vinar Terta and Ponnakokkurs and would wear her Icelandic sweater with great pride.
Jennie was predeceased by her parents, Sigrun and Baldvin, her brothers – Baldur, John, Woodrow, Wally and Alstan Sigurdson, her sisters Dora Collins and Jean Pytlowany, her brothers-in-law Norm Collins and Wally Pytlowany, her sisters-in-law – Mary Sigurdson, Olga Sigurdson and Sally Sigurdson and her nephew Duff Sigurdson. She is survived by her sister – Irene (Leslie) Dube of Saskatoon and her brother Raymond Sigurdson of Vernon, BC, 18 nieces and nephews and 22 great nieces and nephews, several great-great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
Jennie’s family would like to thank all the people who helped Jennie remain as healthy and independent as possible over the last few years including her family, friends, her neighbours at the Monticello condos and the staff at Greenfield Care Home and Glengarda Hospice who kept her comfortable in her last days. As per her wishes, Jennie was cremated. Jennie’s family will lay her to rest in the family plot in Wynyard, SK.
