Herta (Loewen) Bartel

Herta was born to Abram J. and Helena (Loewen) Loewen in Filadelfia, Colony Fernheim, Paraguay on January 15, 1939. She and her twin sister Helga were number 9 and 10 of 11 children.Their family had fled Russia through Germany hoping to get to Canada, but her mother’s Trachoma prevented them from doing so. They arrived in Paraguay in 1931.

Upon confession of her faith, Herta was baptized in the Mennonite Brethren Church in Filadelfia in 1953. She enjoyed singing in the choir very much and it was a blessing to her.

In 1972, Herta immigrated to Canada, joining her three brothers already there. She settled in Vancouver and was followed by her widowed father in 1974.

On January 18th, 1975, Herta married a grain farmer from Drake, Saskatchewan named David Bartel and moved out east to settle in as a farm wife. David and Herta had one daughter Rosella in 1976.

David and Herta farmed until 1992 when they retired. In 2004, they moved to Saskatoon to be closer to their daughter and growing family. Herta lost David to dementia in 2015. After his passing, Herta moved to the Warman Mennonite Special Care home.

Herta is predeceased by her parents Abram and Helena Loewen, husband David, sisters; Maria (Gerhard) Niebuhr, Leni Loewen (in infancy), Lotti (Heinrich) Loewen, Helga (Peter) Hildebrandt, brothers; Jacob (Maria) Loewen, Abram A. (Tina) Loewen, David (Neta) Loewen, Gerd (Sara) Loewen, Hans (Gerlinde) Loewen and Heinrich (Agnes) Loewen.

Herta is survived by her daughter Rosella (Jonathan) Warnock of Neuanlage SK; granddaughter Ivy Warnock, grandsons Wyatt and Jesse Warnock of Neuanlage SK; brother Wilmar (Elsie) Loewen of Kelowna BC; sisters-in-laws; Agnes (Heinrich ✝️) Loewen of Abbotsford BC; Sara (Gerd ✝️) Loewen of Paraguay, and Gerlinde (Hans ✝️) Loewen of Paraguay.

Interment for Herta will be held at 1:00 p.m., in the Warman Memorial Gardens Cemetery located at Central Street West & Range Road 3051, on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

Following the Graveside Service will be a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m., in the Martens Warman Funeral Home, 402 Central Street West, Warman, SK. Pastor Darryl Neudorf will be officiating.
