Helen Harder

August 18, 1926 — September 13, 2025

Helen Harder peacefully left us Saturday, September 13, 202,5 at St. Joseph’s Home in Saskatoon. Aunt Helen was born Aug 18, 1926, to John and Helena Harder in the Aberdeen district. The family moved, and Helen attended Hudson Bay school in the Hepburn District until grade 6. In 1947, she went to work in a cannery in Kelowna, returning home to the farm a year later in 1948, where she continued to live for more than 5 decades.

She lived on the farm with her two brothers, Ed and Fred. She cooked and cleaned for herself, her brothers, and the extended family during any visits. We remember her perfectly spiced pickles, which provided a delicate burn in the mouth, but never so hot that we didn’t want more. She made exceptional white cookies topped with icing and coconut. When they quickly disappeared from the table, more were requested. Aunt Helen would waggle her finger at the requester, repeating their name, as if to say “no more”. With a generous smile, she’d then get up from the farm table and run to fetch more. Aunt Helen was a hard worker who loved to serve family. Aside from the household chores, she was responsible for farm chores, including separating the cream from the milk the cows provided. She would also wrap and label the packages when it came time to butcher livestock.

Aunt Helen loved her garden and all the birds that she could watch outside the kitchen window. She particularly liked hummingbirds. Aunt Helen enjoyed the play of kittens and loved to tickle them. She enjoyed going to Lac La Peche and visiting with the ladies while the guys went fishing. When Grandpa passed away, Aunt Helen became Grandma’s caregiver, moving her from their home in Hepburn to the farm. After Uncle Ed passed, Helen moved to the Warman Retirement home for a number of years before eventually moving to St. Joseph’s home in Saskatoon.

Helen is survived by one Sister-In-Law, Marlene (Goldie) Harder, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and each of her brothers and sisters, including: Abe Harder (Violet), Carl Harder (Mary), John Harder (Mary), Fred Harder, Ed Harder, Jake Harder (Doreen), Pete Harder (Mary), Harry Harder (Katie), Mary Stobbe (Bill), Sarah Wendland and Rueben Harder (Goldie).

Thanks to Warman Retirement Care Home, as well as St. Joseph’s Home, for the many years of providing good care for Aunt Helen.
