With heavy hearts and gratitude for a life well lived, the family of Ernest Henry Ahrends announces his peaceful passing on June 25, 2025, at the age of 84.
Ernie and twin brother Arthur were born on May 9, 1941, in Russell, Manitoba, to Theresa Rose (Hollinger) and William Gordon Hans Ahrends. Though the family lived in Churchbridge, they traveled to Russell for the birth, as it had the best hospital for twins. He grew up alongside Arthur and their sister Wilma, working hard on the family farm and for neighboring farmers. Because of these responsibilities, Ernie left school after Grade 6 to help support the family.
At age 20, Ernie moved to Saskatoon for work. It was there, at a dance, that he met Norma Jean Henning, the love of his life. Ever the gentleman, Ernie stepped in when another young man was bothering Norma—and just three months later, they were married. Their love story would span 64 years.
Ernie worked for John Loraas building Grosvenor Park mall before joining Intercontinental Packers (later Mitchell's Foods), where he proudly worked for 34 years until his retirement in 1996.
He and Norma raised their three daughters and son in Saskatoon before moving in 1973 to an acreage at Floral, Saskatchewan, where they lived for many happy years. There, they embraced a humble, hardworking lifestyle—raising chickens, turkeys, pigs, and a large garden. Ernie chopped wood to heat their home and provided for his family through hunting and fishing, passions he pursued with great skill and joy.
Ernie was a man of many talents and endless humour. He was known for his quick wit, his love of telling jokes, and his trademark thumbs-up. In retirement, he stayed active by videoing weddings, rototilling gardens, and entertaining others with his jigging—performing with his custom jigging board into his 80s. When jigging became too difficult, he turned to playing the spoons, always finding a way to have fun.
Despite his cancer diagnosis in 2020, Ernie never let it slow him down. He faced his illness with courage, grace, and his ever-present positive attitude—always offering a thumbs-up and a smile.
Ernie is survived by his beloved wife Norma Ahrends; daughters Brenda Bourque (late husband Monty) and their children Crystal (Chris), Sean, Adam (Jeremy), Ryan, and Sebrina; Dorothy Slawinski (John) and their sons Josh (Elizabeth) and Nathan; Kathy Bos (Jim) and their daughter Brittney; brother Arthur (Sharon); sister Wilma DeLaurier (Lanny); close family friend Marjorie Suchar, great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and treasured friends. He was predeceased by his son Kevin Ahrends, and is lovingly remembered by Kevin's son, Kody.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate caregivers at St. Paul's Palliative Unit, Glengarda Hospice, Stensrud Lodge, the Cancer Clinic and to Dr. Iqbal for his attentive care. The family also wishes to thank Martens Warman Funeral Home for their support and guidance.
A celebration of Ernie's life will be held on Sunday, September 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Agar's Corner, (Hwy 16 & Floral Rd). Casual dress is welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan in Ernie's memory.
Ernie lived a joyful, humble life filled with love, laughter, and purpose. He will be deeply missed.
