Obituary for Edna Smith

Originally from Birch River, MB., late of Warman, SK.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Mom passed away September 3, 2023, at the age of 92 years, after a 5 month stay in the hospital due to diabetic and breathing complication. Finally, her body called her to her final resting place. Mom was well looked after during her hospital stay, and with little pain through it all. She had a great sense of humor till the end and was continually thanking everyone for her care.

Mom was born in Swan River, Manitoba, on August 22, 1931. She married Ernie Smith on August 24, 1949. Together they raised 4 children, Bunny, Leila, Greg and Pam, living in Birch River, Flin Flon and Prince Albert. Most of her life was spent in Birch River, where she worked at various jobs.

Dad passed away in 1990 and she later found companionship with Hector Fayant. They enjoyed camping, jam session, dances, rodeos and other fun events, until Hector’s passing in 2013.

Mom relocated to Warman, where Pam found her a very wonderful place at Pioneer Place, seniors complex. She made many new friends and enjoyed her life there very much.

She also enjoyed the travels back to the Bellsite Coffee House once a year (a place where her and Hector always enjoyed going). Her travels also took her to Alberta, B.C., Niagara Falls, Manitouwadge, Ont., Las Vegas, Yuma, Mexico, and spending times at Shell Lake with Bunny and Wayne and at Jackfish Lake (Meota), with Leila and Don, where she enjoyed the family gathering each summer, and where she joined in the Ladder-Ball tournament, trying to get her name on the trophy.

She enjoyed the rodeos, and the Berry Barn with Pam and Perry, and the entertainment that Greg and his boys’ music provided.

Due to her diabetes and lung problems, which she couldn’t recover from, her tired body finally took its toll. Mom’s memory and sense of humor stayed with her to her final day, and we will all miss her very much.

Mom is survived by her daughter Bunny (Wayne) and grandson Rory (Tamzen), daughter Leila (Don) and grandson Lonnie (Jen) and great-grandaughters Erika and Alysa, son Greg (Sandi) and grandson Greggory (Courtney) and great-grandaughters Charlie and Scarlet, and grandson Thomas, daughter Pam (Perry) and grandsons James (Stacy), and Mark, her sister Mary Day, and many nieces and nephews.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Ernie Smith, in-laws Tom and Goldie Smith, parents Jim and Florence Day, brother Albert Day, sisters Alice Hickman (George) and Vivian Reynolds (Ab), and nephew Vaughn McNeil.

We will be taking Mom home to Birch River, to be laid to rest with Dad.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, 2:00 p.m., at the Legion Hall, Birch River, Manitoba.

Martens Warman Funeral Home is honoured to be entrusted with the care and arrangements of Edna Smith.
