Christine Susan Johnstone (nee Hawrysh) was born on July 9 1949 and passed away, surrounded by love on March 19, 2026 at Royal University Hospital at the age of 76.
Chris was born and raised in Saskatoon, where she attended Queen Elizabeth Public School before graduating from Aden Bowman Collegiate in 1967. That same year, at a high school party, she met the love of her life, Darryl. They were married in 1969, beginning a lifetime of love, laughter and togetherness that would span 56 wonderful years.
In 1977, Chris became a licensed optician and soon after fulfilled her dream of owning and operating her own store, For Your Eyes Only, in Lawson Heights Mall. From 1980 until her retirement in 1990, she took great pride in serving her community and caring for her customers.
She had an adventurous spirit and a deep love of travel. She explored from coast to coast across Canada, throughout the Caribbean, and along the eastern United States from Maine to Key West, as well as visiting places such as Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Detroit. She was also a dedicated partner in her husband’s professional life, attending and helping organize many work and social gatherings for the ophthalmology community.
She was a proud and loving mother to Greg (born 1970) and Ryan (born 1973), and an incredibly proud Nana to Camden (born 2007).
Chris will be remembered for her infectious laugh, her quick wit, and her fierce determination to see things through. She had a very kind and generous heart, always putting others before herself. Her family was her greatest joy, and she shared an especially close and cherished bond with her grandson, Camden, who was truly the light of her life and apple of her eye. To those who knew and loved her, she was a steady presence. A source of strength, warmth, and guidance whose influence will be felt always.
Chris found her greatest happiness in bringing people together. She was at her very best when hosting suppers with family and friends. Moments she treasured deeply and considered the highlight of her days.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Darryl; her sons, Greg (Jackie) and Ryan (Cheryl); her beloved grandson, Camden; her brother, Robin; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents, Nestor and Doreen; her sister, Carol (Dave Berube); and her brother, David.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Robert Pekush and his staff for their care and support over the years. Special thanks are also given to Dr. Maurice Ogaick and Dr. John Shaw for their compassion and kindness, especially in her final weeks. The family is deeply grateful as well to the nursing staff on Surgery Ward 5300 for their unwavering care and support.
Per honouring her wishes, A celebration of Chris's life will take place at a future date; details will be shared once arrangements are finalized.
