On May 8, 2025, at the incredible age of 102, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished “Nanny” peacefully began her journey home. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and a life devoted to family and others. Her warmth, kindness, and quiet strength touched everyone who knew her.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: daughter Janet (Abe) Unruh, daughter-in-law Colleen Balogh, and son Vern (Corrie) Balogh; her grandchildren: Ashley (Shaun) Rosom, Joel Unruh, Jessica (Tyler) Thoms, Jordan (Thomas) Balogh, and Ethan Balogh; and her great-grandchildren: Rylan, Presley, Carter, and Cohen Rosom, and Parker Thoms; brother Joe (Ruth), sister's Delores (Bernie), Mabel (Orlando) and Naomi (Don).
She is now reunited in Heaven with her husband, Mike (1995), her beloved son Robert (2006), her sisters Hertha, Justina, Ann, and Phyllis, her brothers Walter and Ervin, and many other family members who went before her.
Heidi was born on January 15, 1923, to Ben and Katherina Friesen, and was raised in the Eigenheim district near Rosthern. After her mother’s passing in 1942, young Hedie remained at home to help when her father remarried to Mary Miller. She then ventured west to British Columbia, where she worked in a veneer factory in Vancouver. It was there she endured a life-changing injury, losing four fingers on her right hand. Yet with courage and determination, she relearned how to write, play piano, knit, and crochet—testaments to her resilient spirit.
In the late 1950s, while working at the sanatorium, Hedie met her one true love, Michael Balogh, who was a patient there. Their love blossomed, and they married on June 10, 1960. Together they built a life on a farm near Plunket, raising three children and working side by side. They later retired to Saskatoon, always remaining each other’s constant companion. Mike was the love of her life and her true soulmate; after his passing, she felt his absence deeply and carried his memory in her heart every day.
Hedie had a deep love for her family and an open heart for others. Her home was a haven filled with the smells of homemade buns, perogies, cabbage rolls, and pies—always shared generously with anyone who visited her. Her faith in God was strong and unwavering, sharing His love with others through both her words and actions.
In her later years she lived in the assisted living home in Warman, bringing her closer to her daughter and family. As her health began to decline after a hip fracture, she eventually settled into the Rosthern Nursing Home, where she found comfort in community and the joy of visits from her great-grandchildren, who brought light to her days.
Nanny's hands may have grown tired, but her heart never stopped giving. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and she will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
Do not grieve because she is gone, rejoice because she was here.
