Alma Elizabeth Guenther

November 24, 1964 — May 28, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alma Guenther. After a long battle with breast cancer, Alma passed away at her home in Red Deer at the age of 60.

Alma is survived by her loving parents, Cornie and Elizabeth Guenther; brothers Bruce (Lois), Joe (Carol) and Rick (Mary); and her dear children Chris, Meagan and Alethia, as well as her extended family and adoring friends.

Alma was raised on a small, mixed farm near Hepburn, Saskatchewan, where she made many beautiful memorie

s with her family. Days spent harvesting, or picnic dinners, were especially close to her heart.

After completing highschool, Alma moved to Grande Prairie to attend Peace River Bible Institute, where she developed many lifelong friendships. This experience profoundly impacted her faith journey. She shared many stories about her time in Grande Prairie that reflect her deep love for the community who loved her so fiercely in her early life. Grande Prairie was where Alma started both her career as a registered nurse and eventually, her family.

When Chris and Meagan were still young Alma moved with her family to Lacombe, Alberta, where Alethia was born. Here she became a part of a strong and beautiful community of friends who loved her as much as she loved them. Alma became known as a “village mother” to any and all of the church and summer camp kids who she welcomed easily into her home and heart.

Alma was a natural nurse, known for her deep compassion and fierce advocacy for patients and colleagues alike. She took great pride in her work, and her passion for helping others lives on through her children. All of whom have found careers grounded in supporting others. Her legacy of care will always be remembered.

Alma’s final years were in Red Deer where she spent many days hosting friends and family, gardening, and taking naps in the sun with her beloved dog, Chewie. She loved spending girls’ nights with the Mother Cluckers, whose sisterhood changed her for the better. She had a passion for travelling, road trips and camping, but Hawaii was always her favourite. The family trips to Vancouver Island in the summer hold a special place in our hearts. One of her greatest joys was watching her children grow, a source of pride she shared openly and often. Alma was deeply cherished as a mother.

In 2019 Alma was diagnosed with breast cancer, a challenge she faced with courage, resilience and fierce tenacity. Through both the highs and lows, she remained joyful, full of love, and a source of support for many walking similar paths.

Alma’s faith in God was the source of a deep inner strength that sustained her through suffering and shaped the way she loved—with grace, humility, and compassion. Her faith wasn’t built on simple platitudes—it was honest, tested, and big enough to hold doubt, mystery, and grief alongside joy and hope. She knew that answers to life’s hard questions are not always easy or clear-cut. Alma’s life was a reflection of a faith that embraced complexity with love, courage, and a quiet confidence in God’s loving presence, even when facing the unknown.

Alma had a remarkable gift for making others feel seen, heard, and truly understood. Her sharp sense of humor—often delightfully irreverent—and her unforgettable, infectious laugh brought light to many darker moments. She was patient, kind, empathetic, and gentle—a true beacon in the lives of those around her.
